Electropolishing Process for Stainless Steel

At SUMIPARTS, we specialize in electropolishing, a finishing process that refines and enhances the surface of stainless steel components. This technique removes a thin layer of material through controlled electrochemical dissolution, resulting in a smooth, bright, and corrosion-resistant finish.

Electropolishing is widely used in industries that demand precision, hygiene, and durability, such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, automotive, and aerospace. Unlike mechanical polishing, it does not introduce surface deformation or contaminants, ensuring superior cleanliness and longevity.

How the Electropolishing Process Works

During the process, the stainless steel part is immersed in an electrolyte bath and connected to an electrical current. As the metal acts as an anode, the microscopic peaks on its surface dissolve faster than the valleys, producing a mirror-like finish.

At SUMIPARTS, our advanced control systems allow us to regulate temperature, current density, and chemical composition to achieve consistent and uniform results. This precision guarantees that every surface meets strict industrial quality standards (ISO, ASTM) while enhancing both aesthetics and functionality.

Key Benefits of Electropolishing

  • Improved corrosion resistance: Removes embedded impurities and creates a passive oxide layer.

  • Enhanced surface brightness: Produces a clean, reflective surface without mechanical abrasives.

  • Reduced friction: Ideal for components that require smooth motion or assembly.

  • Easier cleaning and sterilization: Perfect for sanitary applications.

  • Dimensional precision: Maintains tight tolerances with minimal material removal.

By combining CNC machining and electropolishing, SUMIPARTS delivers parts that meet the most demanding specifications for industries where performance and presentation are equally important.

Industrial Applications of Electropolished Components

Electropolished stainless steel components are found across numerous sectors:

  • Medical and pharmaceutical equipment: Surgical tools, implantable parts, and sterile containers.

  • Food and beverage industry: Pipes, valves, and tanks requiring hygienic finishes.

  • Aerospace and automotive: Components that demand lightweight, corrosion-resistant surfaces.

  • Industrial machinery: Shafts, fittings, and mechanical assemblies requiring low friction and high durability.

Each project is carefully engineered by our technical team to ensure a perfect balance between performance, appearance, and long-term reliability.

Quality and Precision in Every Finish

At SUMIPARTS, we apply strict quality control protocols to verify surface roughness, dimensional accuracy, and chemical passivation. Our processes are environmentally responsible and designed to minimize waste while maximizing energy efficiency.

Through continuous investment in technology and expertise, SUMIPARTS maintains its position as a trusted partner in precision metal finishing, offering solutions that add real value to every manufacturing project.

Aspects to consider

The time and voltage applied to contact the surface of the part must be regulated, since depending on the chemical composition, malleability, and the characteristics of the part itself, the current travels and covers it, causing the surface layer to acquire an even more constant finish by the particles removed, so it can be said that the metal part is subjected to an “electrical polishing”. Therefore, the edges and also the detailed work can lose their qualities since the edges will flatten, if the work piece is left under the process for more than the time and voltage due. Not all materials can be electropolished.

Comprehensive Industrial Standards and Grade Alignment

Our chemical engineering laboratory configures custom electrolyte configurations, tank temperatures, and electrical current densities based on the specific metallurgy of your component:

  • Austenitic Series (304, 316L, 317): The core of our bioprocessing and marine operations. Processed to comply perfectly with ASME BPE and ASTM B912 guidelines, guaranteeing an uncompromised, iron-free surface skin.

  • Martensitic & Ferritic Series (410, 420, 430, 440C): High-hardness alloys utilized for surgical instruments, cutting blades, and bearing components. These grades require precise current modulation to prevent localized pitting or chemical “frosting” defects.

  • Precipitation Hardening Alloys (17-4 PH / 15-5 PH): Turned and milled structural components for aerospace and defense hardware, electropolished to remove internal hydrogen embrittlement stresses and maximize environmental field life.

Advanced Internal Cathode Design for Complex Internal Geometries and Bores

A fundamental limitation of standard electrochemical processing is the physical phenomenon known as the Faraday Cage Effect. When a complex component featuring deep internal bores, hollow channels, or intricate blind holes is placed inside a standard electropolishing tank, the electrical current naturally takes the path of least resistance, accumulating exclusively on the exposed exterior surfaces. As a result, the internal walls and hidden fluid-carrying channels receive near-zero electrical current density, leaving the internal core unpolished, unpassivated, and vulnerable to corrosion or bacterial buildup.

To eliminate this engineering blind spot on our specialized high-purity contract lines, Sumiparts designs and deploys custom internal auxiliary cathodes.

Benefits of Electropolishing Stainless Steel

Electropolishing stainless steel provides a number of benefits to our treated part, which are:

  • A considerable improvement on the physical appearance of the piece, achieving a shiny and smooth enamel, with a uniform shine throughout the piece.
  • Improved mechanical properties: as mentioned above, the electropolishing process does not affect the chemical or mechanical properties of the part, but it does provide improvements, in this case in the mechanical properties.
  • Increase in production cycles, especially in the food area due to the fact that electropolishing considerably reduces obstructions, product accumulation, encrustation etc.
  • Reduces galling of threads on stainless steel and carbon and other alloys.
  • Relieves stress from surface´s part.
  • Electropolishing gives the piece excellent protection against corrosion.
  • Improves sterilization and maintenance of hygienically clean surfaces for food, medicine, beverage, and chemical processing equipment.
  • It allows to discover defects in the treated metal surface that are undetectable by other means.
